02 — Signature project
A hillside garden, taken back to bare soil and rebuilt.
A sloping plot around an old sun room with nothing usable on it. Stripped to the ground, re-levelled, retained in stone, then paved, turfed and planted — with the household living there the whole time.

Strip and set levels
Topsoil off with the mini digger and levels cut properly. Everything above this stage depends on getting it right.

Set out on the ground
Curves marked in white line so the client can walk the shape and change it — before a single edging is bedded.

Retain, base, edge
Stone retaining walls hold the upper level, sub-base compacted in layers, edgings haunched so nothing creeps.

Paving, turf, planting
Paving bedded to fall, turf butted and rolled, borders planted and mulched — then the site left swept.
03 — What we are known for
Repointing that lets the stone speak.
Half the old walls in the Borders have been ruined by hard cement smeared across the face. We rake the joints out by hand, keep the pointing recessed behind the arris, and match the mix batch to batch so the wall reads as one piece of work.

The questions we get asked most.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes — the visit, the measure-up and the written price all cost you nothing, and there is no obligation to go ahead. We would rather come and look at a job properly than guess at a number over the phone.
How quickly will I hear back?
Within 24 hours of your call, WhatsApp message or form. If we are up a scaffold when you ring, leave a message or send a WhatsApp and it gets answered the same evening.
Do you take on small jobs, or only full projects?
Both. A morning's repair, a gate rehung, a patch of pointing — they are all worth doing, and they are how most of our bigger jobs start. Tell us what it is and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right people for it.
What does repointing actually involve?
The old, failed mortar is raked out of the joints by hand to a proper depth, the joints are brushed and damped, then packed with fresh mortar mixed to match the wall and finished back so the stone still stands proud. Done right it lasts decades; done with hard cement smeared over the face it traps water and does more harm than good.
Can you work on older or listed stone buildings?
We work on traditional Borders stone regularly — rubble walls, dressed sandstone, quoins and window surrounds, including commercial frontages. For a listed building you will need consent from the local authority before work starts; we are happy to talk through what the job would involve while you sort that out.
Do you do work for landlords and businesses?
Yes — domestic and commercial both. Shopfront stonework, rental property repairs, maintenance rounds. If you manage more than one property, say so when you get in touch and we will work out the practicalities with you.
Will my garden be a building site for weeks?
A full garden rebuild takes as long as it takes, but you get start and finish dates up front and the site gets tidied at the end of each stage. On the big project shown on this page the household lived there throughout.
How do I pay?
Agreed in writing before we start. For larger projects that normally means a staged arrangement tied to the work completed rather than a lump sum up front. Ask when you get your estimate and we will set it out plainly.
